Understanding Air Changes Per Hour (ACH)
Air Changes Per Hour (ACH) measures how many times the total volume of air in a defined space is completely drawn through filtration media and replaced with clean air in a 60-minute period. While square-footage coverage figures on retail boxes assume standard 8-foot ceilings, real rooms with 9, 10, or 12-foot ceilings contain significantly greater air volumes that require higher CFM air cleaners.
The Volumetric Sizing Formula
To accurately calculate the CFM required for your room, use the universal HVAC volumetric formula:
Required CADR (CFM) = (Room Area in sq ft × Ceiling Height in ft × Target ACH) ÷ 60
Recommended Target ACH by Use Case
- 2.0 ACH (Every 30 Minutes): Minimum baseline for general odor control and gross dust reduction in clean environments without pets.
- 4.8 ACH (Every 12.5 Minutes): The AHAM AC-1 benchmark for clinical allergy, asthma, and wildfire smoke mitigation.
- 6.0+ ACH (Every 10 Minutes or faster): Recommended for immunocompromised occupants, active home renovation dust zones, or high-occupancy classrooms.
Worked Calculation Example
Consider a master bedroom measuring 18 ft × 15 ft (270 sq ft) with 10-foot ceilings, occupied by an individual with seasonal pollen allergies:
- Room Volume = 270 sq ft × 10 ft = 2,700 cubic feet
- Target ACH = 4.8
- Required CFM = (2,700 × 4.8) ÷ 60 = 216 CFM
In this example, an air purifier rated for 140 CFM would leave the room under-ventilated, requiring almost 20 minutes per exchange. A unit delivering at least 216–230 CFM (such as a Coway AP-1512HH) is necessary to maintain the therapeutic 4.8 ACH standard.
