Mold Biology: Spores vs. Chemical Toxins

Mold is a living fungus that propagates through airborne reproductive units called spores, typically measuring between 2.0 and 20.0 microns in diameter. Under stress, certain fungal species (such as Stachybotrys chartarum) also produce chemical secondary metabolites called mycotoxins and microbial VOCs (mVOCs) responsible for musty basement odors.

What Filters Can and Cannot Do

A standard MERV 11 or MERV 13 filter captures 85%+ of intact mold spores. However, free aerosolized mycotoxins and mVOC gases bypass fiber filters and require dense activated carbon beds to neutralize.

Indoor Moisture Is the Primary Enemy

Air filtration without humidity control is futile. If indoor relative humidity exceeds 60%, mold spores resting on the air filter itself can germinate, transforming your HVAC filter into an amplification site. Always pair air filtration with basement dehumidification to maintain indoor humidity between 35% and 50%.
