Mineral Scale Chemistry in Humidifiers

When water evaporates into an HVAC airstream, only pure H2O vapor enters the air; all dissolved mineral solids (calcium carbonate, magnesium, iron) remain on the aluminum evaporative panel. Over 60 to 90 days of operation, this mineral buildup hardens into brittle scale that restricts bypass airflow.

Never scrub an evaporative pad with vinegar or harsh chemicals; doing so strips the absorbent ceramic clay coating. Replace the water panel annually at the start of each heating season.
