ASHRAE Position Document Warning
ASHRAE's official Position Document on Filtration and Air Cleaning recommends caution with electronic additive air-cleaning systems, noting that chemical reactions between ions and volatile household organic compounds can generate hazardous secondary byproducts, including formaldehyde and acetaldehyde.
Whenever possible, choose passive, additive-free filtration: mechanical True HEPA and high-mass activated carbon.
