The Diagnostic Power of Static Pressure

Total External Static Pressure (TESP) is the blood pressure of your HVAC system. Measuring TESP tells you immediately whether your ductwork is properly sized, whether your filter is too restrictive, and whether your blower is operating safely.

Step-by-Step Measurement Guide

  1. Drill Test Ports: Drill small 1/4-inch test holes in the return drop (before the filter) and supply plenum (after the air conditioning coil).
  2. Insert Static Probes: Insert static pressure tips with probes pointing directly into the oncoming airflow.
  3. Connect Digital Manometer: Connect hoses to the positive and negative ports of a dual-port digital manometer.
  4. Read Total Static Drop: Add the absolute values of the return and supply pressures. If total static pressure exceeds 0.50 in. w.g. (or equipment nameplate max), airflow is restricted.
