Can a MERV 13 Filter Damage an Older Furnace?

The High-MERV Dilemma for Older Systems

Upgrading to a MERV 13 furnace filter is widely recommended for trapping wildfire smoke, pet dander, and aerosolized viruses. However, if your home relies on an older heating system with a single-speed PSC (Permanent Split Capacitor) blower motor, installing a dense 1-inch MERV 13 filter can inadvertently strangle airflow, elevate system stress, and cause catastrophic heat exchanger or compressor failure.

Engineering Alert: Static Pressure Drop

A typical 1-inch fiberglass filter creates an initial pressure drop of just 0.08 to 0.12 in. w.g. A 1-inch MERV 13 filter often imposes an initial resistance of 0.25 to 0.35 in. w.g. when clean. On an older duct system designed for a maximum Total External Static Pressure (TESP) of 0.50 in. w.g., that leaves almost zero headroom for your evaporator coil and supply ductwork.

What Happens Inside an Older Furnace When Airflow Drops?

Unlike modern electronically commutated motors (ECM) that automatically speed up to overcome resistance, a standard PSC blower moves strictly along a fixed fan curve. When static pressure rises:

  • CFM Airflow Plummets: A blower designed to push 1,200 CFM may drop to 850 CFM.
  • Heat Exchanger Overheating: In winter, insufficient airflow causes heat to build up inside the furnace plenum, repeatedly tripping the high-temperature limit switch and eventually cracking the metal heat exchanger—introducing carbon monoxide risks.
  • AC Evaporator Coil Freeze-Ups: In summer, reduced airflow causes refrigerant suction pressure to drop below freezing, turning condensation on the aluminum coil into a solid block of ice that blocks airflow entirely.

  3. Upgrade to a 4-Inch Media Cabinet: If you want whole-home MERV 13 capture without choking an older blower, install a deep 4-inch or 5-inch media housing like the Aprilaire 1210/1410 or Honeywell F100. Deep pleats multiply surface area sixfold, cutting resistance in half.
