Safe Handling of Post-Wildfire Filters
Following a major wildfire event, your HVAC air filter will be caked in dense, gray-black ash composed of carbon soot, mineral oxides, and heavy metals. Removing a loaded filter carelessly can shake millions of respirable particles directly into your home's airstream.
- Wear an N95 Mask and Gloves: Protect yourself from inhaling agitated ash dust.
- Shut off HVAC Power: Never pull a filter while the blower fan is spinning.
- Slip into a Heavy Plastic Bag Before Moving: Wrap a trash bag around the filter slot opening and slide the filter directly into the bag.
- Wipe Down the Metal Track: Use a damp microfiber cloth to remove settled soot before inserting the fresh filter.
