The Anatomy of Wildfire Smoke Hazards

Wildfire smoke is a hazardous aerosol cocktail of combustion gases, volatile organic compounds (benzene, acrolein, formaldehyde), and respirable fine particulate matter. Over 90% of wildfire particulates fall into the PM2.5 fraction (under 2.5 microns), with a massive sub-micron surge down to 0.1 microns. These particles penetrate deep into human lung alveoli and cross directly into the bloodstream.

Immediate Crisis Protocol

When outdoor AQI exceeds 150: Close fresh air dampers, switch HVAC thermostat fan to ON (continuous circulation) with a MERV 13 filter, and establish a dedicated Clean Air Sanctuary Room running a high-CADR HEPA purifier 24/7.

Step 1: HVAC System Preparation

  • Install MERV 13 Central Filtration: Standard MERV 8 filters capture less than 20% of sub-micron smoke particles. Install a high-efficiency MERV 13 or MPR 1900 filter immediately.
  • Disable Fresh Air Intakes: If your HVAC incorporates an outdoor fresh-air intake damper or HRV/ERV without HEPA bypass, shut the motorized damper or switch the ventilator to 'Off' or 'Recirculate Only'.
  • Set Thermostat Fan to 'ON': Do not leave the fan on 'Auto'. Running the blower continuously ensures your indoor air passes through the central filter 3 to 5 times per hour.
